Week's End Report - July 29th

Tip of the Week!

On August 15th the next session of IVYC110-SP will begin. This is the first step in the three step process towards online instructor certification. Prior to beginning IVYC110-SP, please make sure you've completed BBRD101. After successfully completing IVYC110-SP, you'll be enrolled in IVYC110-IL. The last step in the process is teaching (whether online or face-to-face) while simultaneously participating in IVYC112, which is a mentoring program.

There are no sections of IVYC110-IL remaining that will certify faculty to teach online in the fall. In order for a faculty member to teach online in the fall they must have successfully completed either
  • IVYC101 or
  • IVYC110-SP AND IVYC110-IL or
  • completed IVYC110-SP and currently enrolled in IVYC110-IL
Those faculty who are interested in teaching online in the spring should sign up for the next session of IVYC110-SP. They will have through the end of the fall semester to complete and as soon as they have successfully passed IVYC110-SP, they may enroll in IVYC110-IL.

Systems Information

On Sunday, July 31st, access to the internet will be down from campus between 5 am and 10 am.

Network maintenance beginning at 10 pm on Saturday, August 13th will leave all campuses without wireless internet access until midnight.

Week's End Report - July 15th

Tip of the Week

During Dr. Ellspermann's campus visits many faculty and staff commented that they feel the real story of Ivy Tech is not being adequately told within our communities. The college has set up a website where you can go to tell the full story, as you witness it every day in your own classrooms and offices.

https://www.ivytech.edu/15663.html

Fill out the survey to tell your own definition of success or submit the success story of one of your students.

Course Loading Reminder

Course loading information from the Center for Instructional Technology (C4IT) regarding Fall 2016 courses:

  • Faculty will gain access to these courses on July 25th (the faculty must be loaded into Banner in order to have access)
  • Student enrollments will be loaded into courses on July 25th, however the course will not become available to students until 72 hours prior to the course start date
Please note, there are two different types of course “loading” - instructor loading and course content loading.

  • Instructor loading- Each school inputs instructors into their courses through Banner. Once the courses become available to instructors through Blackboard, any instructor who has been assigned to a course through Banner will then be able to access the course in Blackboard. You will not see fall courses in Blackboard until after July 25th. If you do not see your course in Blackboard after July 25th, it is because your school has not put you into Banner. To remedy this, you must speak to your school. After you've been added to your course in Banner, allow 36 hours for the course to appear in Blackboard.
  • Course content loading- Statewide online course content is loaded by the Center for Instructional Technology, regional online course content is loaded by your regional Online Technologies Coordinators. All courses must use the same 16-session formatted original course as loaded into their live course, 16-week courses complete one session per week, eight-week courses complete two sessions per week, etc. Instructors are not permitted to make changes to assignments or to course layout. You may post clarifying information or supplemental materials, but graded assignments may not be changed.

Week's End Report - July 8th

Tip of the Week!

As midterms and finals quickly approach, we begin making arrangements for students to take proctored tests. A lot of our students are off-campus for the summer and it's not convenient for them to come in to test at the Ivy Tech campuses or sites. While there are other proctor locations that meet the criteria, it can sometimes be difficult to determine whether a proctor the student has selected is appropriate.

For those cases, the college recommends the use of ProctorU. ProctorU is an online test proctoring service available anywhere throughout the world. They provide proctoring services for students at remote locations.

To learn more about ProctorU, attend the ProctorU Instructor Training webinar on Friday, July 15th at 2:00 pm EDT.
https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/9104788983916557570

Prior to attending the webinar, please view the ProctorU video under the Click for Help tab in Blackboard.

If your students are interested in learning more about ProctorU, please share with them the following site:
https://www.proctoru.com/portal/ivytech/index

That site contains important information for students including a demo of the ProctorU services and a link for test scheduling.

Our wireless internet and VPN will be undergoing maintenance from 11:30 pm on Weds. July 13th until 3:30 am on Thurs. July 14th. Wireless access on campus and VPN access from remote locations will be unavailable during this time.

Banner will be undergoing maintenance from 3 - 11 am on Sunday, July 17th. All Banner modules and Direct Student Loan Requests will be unavailable during this time.

Week's End Report - July 1st

Tip of the Week!

Online technologies are a big part of our world at Ivy Tech. A significant percentage of courses are fully online and all of our courses utilize online technologies in some form or fashion. As the technologies associated with online course content have grown and evolved, tremendous classroom opportunities have emerged.

Purdue University's IMPACT program has studied student-centered teaching, an approach that focuses on active learning, specifically collaborative and cooperative learning. Active, collaborative learning is strongly linked to increased student engagement and ultimately to a higher level of student success.

The IMPACT program was modeled around a motivational theory called the Self-Determination Theory (SDT). SDT suggests that when students feel satisfied in three basic areas - autonomy, competence, and connectedness - they are increasingly motivated to participate in the learning process and enjoy the benefits of active learning.

What, exactly, does this mean?
  • Autonomy - when students are given a choice in their learning or demonstration of learning, it increases their feelings of autonomy
  • Competency - a student who feels confident in their knowledge of a subject matter and their ability to communicate that knowledge, they feel competent
  • Relatedness - students who feel connected to the course materials, their instructor, and their fellow students, they are able to engage more fully in the course

Fortunately we have at our fingertips a wealth of technologies and information that can facilitate student-centered learning and increase student engagement and motivation in our classrooms here at Ivy Tech. Those technologies include:
  • Blackboard - post a variety of course materials so students have alternative means by which to meet course learning objectives
  • GoToMeeting - web conferencing technology allows us to "meet" virtually with individuals and groups in any location
  • Discussion Boards, Blogs, and Wikis - Blackboard has a host of tools available to facilitate collaboration among students
  • Web 2.0 Tools - students communicate more freely using their preferred method of communication; this extends well beyond traditional student-instructor interaction to encompass student-student collaboration as well as new methods for student demonstration of learning
  • And much more! The possibilities are limitless!

Training Information

Those faculty who are interested in teaching online, who are not already certified to teach online, may still sign up for the summer session of IVYC110-SP. That course will run through July 30th. In order to participate, you must first have successfully completed BBRD101.

Faculty who have not been previously certified will also need to complete IVYC110-IL (must first complete both BBRD101 and IVYC110-SP). There will be two sections of IVYC110-IL offered that will enable faculty to teach online in the fall. Those sections begin:
  • Monday, July 18th
  • Monday, August 1st
Enrollments are extremely limited so if you have previously been online certified at Ivy Tech, please do not register for these certification courses.
