Tip of the Week!

As we approach the end of the semester you will be finalizing your course and submitting course records. Since we only do some of these things a few times per year, it’s easy to forget how! Fortunately, everything you need to know is on the Finalizing Your Course page on the IDC website!

On this site you will find information on:

  • How to archive e-mail on Outlook
  • Exporting grades from Blackboard
  • How to save documents as PDF

Your schools will distribute information regarding the things they would like you to do to finalize your course for the semester.


 Maintenance
  • Blackboard maintenance will be taking place beginning on Weds. Dec. 23rd and ending the morning of Dec. 26th. During that time, Blackboard will be offline and unavailable.

Week's End Report - Dec. 11th

Tip of the Week!

Reminder that Fall 201520 courses end next Saturday, December 19th.  Below is helpful information to remember when grading.

Remember to always enter 0's for all those assignments for which your students did not earn any points. This becomes particularly important at the end of the semester. Due to a glitch in the grade center in Blackboard, assignments may become invisible to the students if 0's are not entered where appropriate thus leading students to believe that their score is higher than it really is.


For example: Quiz 1 was due in Session 2. John Student does not complete Quiz 1 and Ann Instructor leaves the Quiz 1 score blank. After the due date, the quiz is made unavailable to students. Because John Student doesn't have a score for Quiz 1, the column disappears from his grade center as it disappears from the Class Session. John's grade center will now look like this:

Total = 40/40     100%

John now thinks he has a score of 40/40, or 100%. Without an extensive review of the course calendar and syllabus, John would have no indication that his score is actually 40/50, or 80%.

If a 0 is entered for Quiz 1 for John Student he would then be able to see the Quiz in the grade center (as shown below). This will give students accurate and complete information with which to calculate their true grade.

Systems Information

The Lafayette region has once again ranked second in the state for number of students using the Tutor.com online tutoring service! First was Central Indiana with 1,106 students utilizing the service. Lafayette had 414 students utilize the service in the month of November, in addition to 43 students from Kokomo.

Please continue recommending the service to your students. The service has reported very high usage for Math and English courses. 97% of students report that the service helps them complete their homework assignments and is helping them to improve their grades.

The service can be accessed through Blackboard in the Tutor.com module on the home tab. 

Course Loading Reminder
Course loading information from the Center for Instructional Technology (C4IT) regarding Spring 2016 courses:

  • Faculty will gain access to these courses on Dec. 14th (the faculty must be loaded into Banner in order to have access)
  • On Dec. 14th a global announcement will be posted in all courses regarding students gaining access 72 hours before classes start- faculty will not be able to delete this announcement but it will automatically disappear when courses become available to students
  • Student enrollments will be loaded into courses on Dec. 14th, however the course will not become available to students until 72 hours prior to the course start date
  • Starting on Dec. 23rd, Banner will sync with Blackboard twice per day
  • From Dec. 23rd to the 26th Blackboard will be performing an upgrade and will be unavailable (please note the outage has been extended one day longer than was previously planned)
Please note, there are two different types of course “loading” - instructor loading and course content loading.


  • Instructor loading- Each school inputs instructors into their courses through Banner. Once the courses become available to instructors through Blackboard, any instructor who has been assigned to a course through Banner will then be able to access the course in Blackboard. You will not see spring courses in Blackboard until after December 14th. If you do not see your course in Blackboard after December 14th, it is because your school has not put you into Banner. To remedy this, you must speak to your school. After you've been added to your course in Banner, allow 36 hours for the course to appear in Blackboard.
  • Course content loading- Statewide online course content is loaded by the Center for Instructional Technology, regional online course content is loaded by your regional Online Technologies Coordinators. All courses must use the same 16-session formatted original course as loaded into their live course, 16-week courses complete one session per week, eight-week courses complete two sessions per week, etc. Instructors are not permitted to make changes to assignments or to course layout. You may post clarifying information or supplemental materials, but graded assignments may not be changed.

Tip of the Week

BBRD101: Blackboard 9 Faculty Training is required of all faculty, both online and face-to-face prior to teaching. (For more information see ASOM policy 7.5.) 

Successfully completing BBRD101 allows faculty to teach face-to-face or hybrid courses. In order to teach online, faculty need to have successfully completed:
  • BBRD101 and IVYC101, or 
  • BBRD101 and IVYC110 and IVYC112, or
  • BBRD101 and IVYC110 and currently registered for IVYC112, may teach online with a mentor

If you have not already completed BBRD101 (or it's predecessor BBRD291X), log in to Blackboard and look for BBRD101 under "Courses where you are: Student." 

If you are not currently enrolled in BBRD101 speak with your program chair or regional Online Technologies Coordinator (OTC). Whenever possible, sign up for BBRD101 at your own region to help your program chair and OTC track your certification.

Website Update

The course setup checklists for Spring 2016 have been added to the Getting Started website. When you gain access to your courses after December 14th, you may begin setting them up using the information provided in those checklists. For faculty in Lafayette and Kokomo, the information contained on those forms will be used during course checks. Please note that some information has changed from last semester so please be sure to check the list and update your syllabi accordingly.

Systems Information

McGraw-Hill Connect experienced an interruption of service from approximately 5 pm EST on Sunday, November 29th through 1 am EST on Monday, November 30th. Please note that the 29th was a fall break day and no work was permitted to be due on that date.

Tip of the Week!

We all know that communication and student engagement are key factors to student success in online courses. But what exactly does that mean? And how can we model our classrooms to facilitate good communication and a deeper connection with and among our students?

The IDC has developed a short, self-paced training course titled "Communication and Engagement in Online Education." This course addresses the following concepts:
  • Why communication is important
  • Overcoming barriers to communication
  • Communication tools and methods
  • Student engagement

Week's End Report - Nov. 6, 2015

Tip(s) of the Week!

The monthly Online Technology Coordinators meeting was held on Thursday, Nov. 5th on GoToMeeting. In attendance were 16 representatives from Regions 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, as well as multiple representatives from C4IT. The following items were discussed:
  • The new IVYC110 has had poor persistence from the four self-paced modules at the beginning of the course to the two instructor-led modules that follow (only approximately half of the registrants are successful in completing the self-paced modules). The current plan is to begin having each of the regions facilitate the self-paced modules. This has the potential to allow for better communication between the faculty and instructors as well as opening up more sessions and allowing faculty the opportunity to participate in a more timely fashion. We will keep you posted as we learn more about the changes in how this course will be delivered.
  • McGraw-Hill has announced that they will be removing approximately 1,900 titles from Books 24/7. The titles will remain available until Dec. 31st. If you are currently using a McGraw-Hill title from Books 24/7, speak with your librarian to find a suitable replacement title. Statewide online courses that use Books 24/7 will be updated prior to spring, you will not need to do anything with those courses.
  • Blackboard maintenance will be taking place beginning on Weds. Dec. 23rd and ending the morning of Dec. 25th. During that time, Blackboard will be offline and unavailable.
  • The Temporary Course Access module (also known as Program Chair Observer module) will no longer be removed at the end of each semester. Enrollments created by the module will be removed from courses at the end of each semester, but Program Chairs and Department Chairs will maintain their access to the module. If you find in the spring that you have lost your access, please contact us and we can request access be restored.
  • We were very proud to see that Lafayette had the second highest participation in the state with Tutor.com! This tool is extremely popular with students, so please continue encouraging students to take advantage of this resource.
  • Single textbook adoption for all online courses was discussed. This is scheduled to take place beginning in the fall of 2016. This means that all online courses across the state would be required to use the same textbook, including regional online courses. While C4IT does not have a plan in place to handle this change, please be aware and speak with your counterparts and curriculum committees about the need to share online course content. We have a list of the regional online courses currently being offered in Lafayette and Kokomo as well as information about the status of the course (what textbook is being used, is it QM compliant, etc.) so please let us know if you have any questions about what we currently have available.

Systems Notifications

On August 7th we announced a tool called DropThought. Last night, DropThought announced that they are going out of business. If you are using this tool in your course, here is an article from the Open Education Database website regarding some similar alternative tools that could be used in its place.
